Compact Fluorescent

This week our fantastic government passed an energy bill. On the top, this sounds like a wonderful thing since anything that lessens our need for foreign oil is a good thing. For now, I just want to touch on one aspect of the bill, CFLs. They are wonderful devices, my house has been full of them for years. As much as I love them, they will not save the world and they aren’t adequate for all uses. For congress to decide that we can no longer have incandescent lighting over 40 watts is a joke.

Do we really need government mandating something as inconsequential as light bulbs? Believe me, the cities are not going to start pulling down their energy hog street lighting and go with something under 40 watts. We, the people, are the ones thats going to be inconvenienced when we aren’t the largest users of lighting based electricity to begin with. Look out the window and you will see the largest use for lighting energy, the street lamp.

I still need time to pour over the energy bill, I am sure its going to be filled with other insanities. For now we need clear and concise energy policies, not feel good government laws. With the added use of the CFL, we will soon find more lead filling our waters. If every house in theUSA used CFLs, we will have 50,000 tons of mercury to dispose of eventually. They tell us recycling will take care of that. We can’t get people to recycle aluminum, and it often fetches a worthwhile price. Please people, lets force our government to make smart decisions, not the feel good policies of of the left.
